Social Media Influence on Teenage Girls Body Image

The average size of the idealized woman, as portrayed by models, has stabilized at 13-19% below healthy weight (Body Image). The media plays an important role in American lives, as it persuades to change the way people think, live, dress, and most importantly, view themselves. Majority of ads in today's media use women to target the younger audience. Because the younger audience is the main consumer of media ads, they are the most affected. Beauty magazines, commercial, music videos, all use this image of a perfect woman who are noticeable thin or has the "ideal" image. The ongoing bombardment of these images affects the way teen girls view their own bodies. Social media has seemingly had an increasing affect on the way adolescent females take care of their body weight. Due to the high volume of commercial products being sold in America, the easiest way to target a large audience is through multiple forms of advertisements. With this being said, in almost every aspect of the media, the average teenage girl will come across an image of a woman's body that may not look anything like hers. The media's role in social popularity makes young girls believe that if this America says is acceptable, than anything less than that is wrong. The effect of social media on the body image of teen girls is not only detrimental to their physical appearance but mental and emotional stability. As the competition to gain customers increases, the role of social marketing is to get viewers to buy the product, in doing so, media has a direct influence on how young girls feel about their bodies.

To begin with, the social market uses the visual aid of models to better attract its viewers and customers. Most of the advertisements, more than 50%, use an appeal to beauty to sell their products (Teen Futures). In many ads it is highly noticeable that marketers promote the "perfect body" in order to make their product sell. Society has placed upon a pedestal, women who extremely thin and tall. Ever since the early 1980's, media such as television shows have used the look of thin women to increase viewing numbers. A billboard advertisement for the popular television series, Friends, used the image of anorexic chic but was soon pulled (Dying to be Thin). Mass media advertisements such as those, reach a wide variety of audiences and promotes the fact that the actors on television are not only thin, but battling a deathly illness. Display images of women who are lower than their healthy body weight sends out a dangerous message that it's the "cool" thing to do. Music videos, increasingly more than television shows, praise the female body. Music artist and producers use the features of women to attract the audience and unknowingly young girls. According to Mascarenhas, Higby (1993), they have found that “parent- and media –informative influences exceed almost all other.” (pp. 53-58). Therefore, we should keep in mind that there are many teens that try their best to look like their favorite actor. In recent years, much news spread about women who would go on a serious diet so they would look like the picture of a model in a Victoria Secret magazine. As a result, that caused them many health problems, such as eating disorders, lack of appetite, even huge weight loss that, unfortunately, might cost them their lives. That reminds me of a story that I saw a couple years ago on television; it was simply about a young woman who went on serious diet and lost around 40 pounds, to look like a famous Hollywood actress in a photo in the magazine. The girl put her time into exercise every day for more than 10 hours to achieve her goal. But unluckily, the picture was modified so this actress would look this thin! Can you imagine that? That girl reached a body shape that even the actresses could not achieve because of a picture.
